Michael W. Cothren

Michael W. Cothren

Dr. Michael W. Cothren is the Scheuer Family Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Department of Art at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Medieval Studies Coordinator and Humanities Division Chair. He has taught specialised courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on visual narrative and theory and method, since his arrival at Swarthmore in 1978, but he particularly enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners. His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in Picturing the Celestial City, a book about the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral.

Michael works at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, as a consultative curator. He has served on the International Center of Medieval Art's board of directors, as well as the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and his local school board.

Art History 5th Edition (PDF) continues to balance formal analysis with contextual art history in order to involve a diverse student audience. Authors Michael Cothren and Marilyn Stokstad, both scholars as well as teachers, share a common vision that survey courses should be filled with as much enjoyment as learning, and that they should foster a passionate, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts.

This revision is the most comprehensive and strongest learning program for measuring student progress and improving student success in achieving the outcomes and goals of the art history survey course. Not only does the textbook address four all-embracing goals of the survey course, the new MyArtsLab further develops and supports these outcomes and skills with market-leading learning tools such as personalized study plans for every art student and multimedia assets geared towards addressing different abilities and learning styles, such as chapter audio, Closer Looks, student videos, architectural panoramas and much more.
