About The Author

Lee Alan Dugatkin

Lee Alan Dugatkin

Lee Alan Dugatkin is a professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at the University of Louisville. His main area of research is the evolution of social behavior. He is currently studying the evolution of cooperation, aggression, antibiotic resistance, risk-taking behavior, and the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution. Dr. Dugatkin is the author of over 145 articles on evolution and behavior in journals such as Nature and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and several trade monographs on the evolution of cooperation and the history of science. He is also the author of Principles of Animal Behavior, Second Edition.

As Principles of Animal Behavior, 4th Edition, (PDF) makes clear, the tapestry of animal behavior is created from weaving all of these mechanisms into a beautiful whole. With Dugatkin’s beautifully illustrated, thorough, and up-to-date fourth edition, we are able to respect that beauty anew.

Since the last edition of this conclusive textbook was published in 2013, much has happened in the field of animal behavior. In this 4th edition, Lee Alan Dugatkin draws on leading-edge new work not only to inform and expand on the studies presented, but also to strengthen the previous editions’ focus on crucial and proximate causation, as well as the ebook’s unique stress on natural selection, learning, and cultural transmission. The result is an advanced textbook on animal behavior that explains basic concepts in a way that is both scientifically rigorous and available to students. Each chapter in the ebook offers a sound theoretical and conceptual basis upon which the empirical studies rest. An entirely new feature in this Fourth edition is the Cognitive Connection boxes in Chapters 2–17, designed to dig deep into the significance of the cognitive underpinnings to many types of behaviors. Each box emphasizes on a specific issue associated with cognition and the specific topic covered in that chapter.

Up-to-date, richly illustrated, and highly integrative. It thus deserves serious consideration by anyone looking for a textbook to support undergraduate offerings in behavioral ecology or animal behavior. . . . Principles of Animal Behavior 4e is readable and comprehensive, summarizing not only what is well documented but more importantly where cohesive understanding is lacking, and thus where further research will prove most profitable.”

The ebook reveals a richly illustrated panoramic view of animal behavior and, where it can, it also offers examples of the neurobiological, physiological and molecular genetic mechanisms that may underlie it. . . . Dugatkin’s textbook . . . can be enjoyed by anybody who has an interest in the beauty of animal behavior. . . . Excellent.” — Times Higher Education
